About the Speaker
Dr. William J. Schwartz is a distinguished neurologist with a passion for both clinical practice and neuroscience education. He has dedicated his career to mentoring trainees in basic and clinical neuroscience while practicing general neurology.
For nearly four decades, Dr. Schwartz has led groundbreaking NIH-funded research on biological clocks, with a particular focus on the master brain clock in the hypothalamus. His contributions to the field have earned him leadership roles, including Chair of the Gordon Conference on Chronobiology (1993), President of the Society for Research on Biological Rhythms (2004-2006), and Editor-in-Chief of the Journal of Biological Rhythms (2014-2019). He has also delivered prestigious lectures at international conferences, such as the Pittendrigh/Aschoff Lecture of the SRBR (2014) and the J. Ariëns Kappers Lecture of the European Biological Rhythms Society (2017).
At Dell Medical School, Dr. Schwartz plays a pivotal role in developing interdisciplinary courses bridging biology and medicine for UT undergraduates, as well as enhancing neurology education for medical students and residents. His commitment to medical education was recognized through his induction into the Dell Med Academy of Distinguished Educators (2020) and the UT System Kenneth I. Shine, M.D., Academy of Health Science Education (2022).
Dr. Schwartz earned his medical degree and neurology residency training at the University of California, San Francisco, followed by a research fellowship at the National Institute of Mental Health. His academic career has spanned renowned institutions, including Harvard Medical School, Massachusetts General Hospital, and the University of Massachusetts. Since 2005, he has served as an invited professor at universities across the Netherlands, France, Germany, Italy, Israel, New Zealand, Japan, and the United States.
His extensive contributions to chronobiology, neuroscience, and medical education continue to shape the next generation of clinicians and researchers.
