What is the Healthcare Training Program?
At Pre-Health Shadowing (PHS), we believe that every journey into healthcare has a unique starting point. For some, it begins at university; for others, it takes shape at home. But for many, the first spark ignites in Healthcare.
The Healthcare Training Program is how PHS extends its mission into local communities through student-led affiliate clubs. Each HTP club is an officially recognized chapter of Pre-Health Shadowing operating at a high school or college campus, run by students with a faculty advisor, and supported by the PHS national leadership team.
Pre-Health Shadowing is a 501(c)(3) nonprofit that has impacted over 81,000 students since 2020 by democratizing access to virtual shadowing, mentorship, and professional development in healthcare. HTP brings that same mission—equity, access, and empowerment—to Healthcares across the country.

How to start a chapter
From interest form to your first general body meeting—here's the path.

Submit interest form
Fill out the form below with your name, school, and basic info. The PHS HTP team reviews every submission.

Onboarding call
A member of the HTP team meets with you over Zoom to walk through expectations, the Affiliate Club Policy, and chapter setup.

Find a faculty advisor
Each chapter needs a school-approved faculty advisor (a teacher, counselor, or staff member who supports the club).

Get school approval
PHS clubs are official school organizations. You'll work with your school's club approval process—we'll provide any documentation your school needs.

Build your officer team
Recruit a president, VP, treasurer, and secretary. Hold an interest meeting. Register members through the PHS National Registration Portal.

Launch & report monthly
Hold your first general body meeting, start programming, and submit monthly check-ins to your PHS liaison via email or Zoom.
Requirements
What chapters are responsible for
HTP chapters operate semi-autonomously but follow the standards set in the PHS Affiliate Club Policy.
Leadership structure
- President, Vice President, Treasurer, and Secretary at minimum
- Annual leadership elections to ensure continuity
- School-approved faculty advisor
- Open communication with designated PHS liaison
Membership
- Maintain an up-to-date membership roster
- All members registered through the PHS National Registration Portal
- Inclusive and nondiscriminatory recruiting
- Membership tracked via shared spreadsheet accessible to HTP leadership
Communication & reporting
- Monthly check-ins with PHS via email or Zoom
- Events and meetings logged on the chapter's Google Calendar
- Significant decisions communicated through the appointed liaison
- Zoom appointments scheduled at least 2 weeks in advance
Finance & branding
- Maintain accurate income and expense records
- Submit budget summaries quarterly or upon PHS request
- Use of PHS name and logo follows national branding guidelines
- Affiliation stated as "[School Name] Chapter of Pre-Health Shadowing – HTP"

Policies
Policies, safety & legal
Compliance & conduct
Chapters must comply with PHS's policies on safety, ethics, inclusivity, and leadership conduct. Volunteers working directly with minors or in sensitive roles may be subject to background checks. All public communications must reflect PHS's values of professionalism, equity, and respect.
Legal & insurance
HTP affiliate clubs operate under the umbrella of PHS but are not independent legal entities. Each chapter is responsible for compliance with their school's policies and any applicable local, district, or state-level requirements—including those related to insurance or liability. PHS provides guidance but does not assume liability for chapter-related activities.
Termination
PHS reserves the right to revoke a chapter's official status in cases of failure to adhere to policy, misalignment with organizational values, or inactivity / lack of reporting for more than one academic semester.
Amendments
Policies are reviewed annually and may be revised by the PHS National Leadership Team. Chapters are notified of any updates and given implementation guidance as needed.

Frequently asked questions
Is there a cost to start an HTP chapter or join one?
No. HTP is free, just like every other Pre-Health Shadowing program. PHS is a registered 501(c)(3) nonprofit, and chapter setup, mentorship, and access to all PHS resources are offered at no cost. Chapters may collect optional local membership dues (subject to PHS approval) but it's not required.
Do I need to be a certain grade to start a chapter?
HTP is open to Healthcare students in grades 9–12. Chapter founders are typically juniors or seniors who can commit to leading for at least one full academic year, but motivated underclassmen with a faculty advisor's support are welcome to apply.
What if my school already has a pre-med or health club?
That's fine—HTP can complement existing clubs rather than replace them. In some cases, an existing club can become an official HTP affiliate. Mention this on your interest form and we'll talk through the right approach during your onboarding call.
What is the time commitment for chapter leaders?
It varies by chapter, but most leaders spend a few hours per month on planning, meetings, and PHS check-ins. Active chapters typically hold 1–2 general body meetings per month, plus officer meetings as needed. PHS check-ins happen monthly via email or Zoom.
Can I join HTP if I don't want to start a chapter?
Yes. Any Healthcare student can register on the PHS website and access live virtual shadowing sessions, certificates, and resources independently. The chapter model is for students who want to build a local community at their school—but it's optional. Create a PHS account to get started as an individual member.
Is HTP open to schools outside the United States?
Yes. PHS serves students globally, and HTP is open to Healthcares anywhere with internet access. International chapters may need to adapt some governance details to local school requirements—we'll work through that during your onboarding call.
What happens if a chapter goes inactive?
Per the Affiliate Club Policy, PHS reserves the right to revoke a chapter's official status if it fails to report or hold activities for more than one academic semester. We'd much rather support a struggling chapter than terminate it—if your chapter hits a rough patch, reach out to your PHS liaison early and we'll help you regroup.
