About the Speaker

Georges C. Benjamin, MD is the Executive Director and CEO of the American Public Health Association (APHA), the nation’s leading organization dedicated to improving and protecting the health of the public. A trained emergency physician and nationally recognized public health leader, Dr. Benjamin has spent decades advancing health equity, strengthening public health systems, and shaping policy at the local, national, and global levels. Before joining APHA, Dr. Benjamin served as Secretary of the Maryland Department of Health and Mental Hygiene, where he led efforts in disease prevention, emergency preparedness, and health system reform. He has advised multiple presidential administrations, Congress, and international health organizations on public health strategy and crisis response. Dr. Benjamin earned his Doctor of Medicine (MD) and is widely known for his leadership during public health emergencies and his advocacy for evidence-based public health policy. His career exemplifies the impact physicians can have beyond clinical practice through leadership, policy, and population health.
