About the Speaker

Dr. Christine Khandelwal graduated from Lake Erie College of Osteopathic Medicine and completed a residency in Family Medicine at the University of Pittsburgh Medical Center. Dr. Khandelwal realized her passion for caring for the complex, geriatric, and seriously ill population, which led her to pursue a Geriatrics Fellowship, concentrating in Hospice and Palliative Medicine, at UNC Chapel Hill. Dr. Khandelwal has been practicing as a clinician educator, developing programs for the past ten years, including developing the Inpatient Palliative Care Consult Service at the Wake Med Hospital System where she also served as adjunct faculty for Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine. Dr. Khandelwal is currently a Professor of Family Medicine at Campbell University School of Osteopathic Medicine, Director of Geriatrics and Palliative Medicine. Dr. Khandelwal brings her experiences and expertise in education to Harnett County to provide interprofessional medical education and training in the field of geriatrics and palliative medicine to improve the care of our vulnerable population. Dr. Christine Khandelwal was excited for the opportunity to work in Harnett County to provide her services to those in our community in need of this care. Dr. Khandelwal serves in several leadership roles to represent the fields of geriatrics and hospice and palliative medicine both at the regional, state, and national level. In these leadership roles, Dr. Khandelwal hopes to continue to advocate on behalf of her patients, their families, and caregivers, not only in Harnett County but for the other surrounding communities as well. In 2018, Dr. Khandelwal was appointed to serve on the North Carolina Medicine Board, a position appointed by NC Governor Roy Cooper, and currently Dr. Khandelwal serves as the Board President. As the first hospice and palliative medicine physician in the state to serve on the Board, she is only the second osteopathic female physician to serve as President in the Board’s 150-year history. Dr. Khandelwal participates in decisions on important issues and topics such as fair access to restricted medications and ensuring more access to care across the state. Dr. Khandelwal often includes her learners to participate in these leadership and advocacy opportunities as a way to nurture future leaders in healthcare.
