Heroes Behind the Mask is a book created under Pre-Health Shadowing (PHS) to capture the untold narratives of healthcare professionals who served during the COVID-19 pandemic. The project features real stories from doctors, nurses, public health experts, and educators — exploring the intersection of healthcare, humanity, and systemic inequity.
Co-authored by Ramsha Essa (business student & software engineer) and Mirza Baig (medical student entering residency), and coordinated by Alina Azmat, the book highlights 30 professionals — many of whom have spoken at PHS virtual sessions.
The book club converts the book into a consistent student program: structured discussion, community, and repeatable weekly sessions.
Session planning, facilitation standards, outreach, operations, and weekly iteration to keep the experience high-quality.
Multiple reliable weekly sessions, strong engagement, measurable growth, and a program students want to return to (and invite friends to).
This book club sits inside the broader Heroes Behind the Mask project — a national storytelling initiative honoring healthcare professionals from the COVID-19 era, now expanding through year-long outreach, education, and community impact.
