About the Speaker
Dr. Julie Ann Sosa is the Leon Goldman, MD Distinguished Professor of Surgery and Chair of the Department of Surgery at UCSF, where she is also a Professor of Medicine and affiliated faculty with the Philip R. Lee Institute for Health Policy Studies. She joined UCSF in 2018 after serving on the faculty at Duke. A leading endocrine surgeon, her clinical work centers on thyroid cancer. She is an NIH‑ and FDA‑funded investigator and has authored more than 400 peer‑reviewed papers and 80 book chapters and reviews, with major contributions to outcomes research, health care delivery, hyperparathyroidism, and thyroid cancer, especially through clinical trials. She has written or edited seven books.
Dr. Sosa serves on the Board of Directors of the International Thyroid Oncology Group and co‑chaired the ATA committee responsible for the 2025 differentiated thyroid cancer guidelines. She is an editor of Greenfield’s Surgery and Secretary‑Treasurer of the Halsted Society. She is a past President of the American Thyroid Association and former Editor‑in‑Chief of the World Journal of Surgery.
A dedicated mentor, she has trained more than 90 students, residents, and fellows. Her contributions to education and leadership have been recognized through induction into the ACS Academy of Master Educators (2020), the ATA’s Lewis E. Braverman Distinguished Lectureship Award (2017), and its Distinguished Service Award (2022). She received UCSF’s Chancellor’s Diversity Award for the Advancement of Women (2022), and in 2025 the AAMC honored UCSF Surgery and its Muriel Steele Society with the GWIMS Leadership Award for an Emerging Organization.
Born in Montreal and raised in upstate New York, Dr. Sosa earned her AB from Princeton, MA from Oxford, and MD from Johns Hopkins, where she also completed the Halsted residency and a fellowship.
