California College Students Establish Virtual Pre-Health Shadowing Program in Response to COVID-19
Free Online Platform Provides Virtual Shadowing Sessions for Pre-Health Students During Global Pandemic
ALAMEDA, Calif., December 28, 2020
Students at the University of California, Merced, have launched Pre-Health Shadowing, a non-profit, student-led organization that provides free virtual shadowing opportunities for pre-health students via an online platform.
The online shadowing program features live streaming sessions with a variety of health professionals, including physicians, nurses, physician assistants, dentists, veterinarians, researchers, EMTs, health administrators, and more. Health professionals discuss their careers, education, extracurricular activities, admissions process, day-in-the-life, interesting cases, tips and more. Sessions are recorded and can be watched at a later time to provide options for students who need flexible scheduling. Following the session, students complete a short assessment to receive a certificate verifying their participation in the program.
“Due to COVID-19, many in-person shadowing programs and clinical opportunities have been canceled, disrupting the paths of thousands of pre-health students,” said Nina Bouzamondo-Bernstein, co-founder and CEO of Pre-Health Shadowing. “These shadowing hours are crucial for the academic and professional development that students need in order to be a successful health program applicant. Pre-Health Shadowing allows students to continue on their academic track without being delayed due to COVID restrictions. Our goal at Pre-Health Shadowing is to provide opportunities for all students through our online platform, supporting the fight to end inequity and promoting diversity in health education and health care.”
Pre-Health Shadowing launched in September 2020 and registered as a non-profit company on November 16, 2020. Since launching, more than 10,000 pre-health students have joined and over 70 professionals have agreed to participate. Pre-Health Shadowing is a free resource that is available for students globally.
